Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain or ceramic that are permanently bonded to your teeth. They can cover up the entire visible portion of your tooth, effectively masking a wide range of cosmetic imperfections, including:

  • Cracks and chips in your teeth
  • Discolored teeth
  • Teeth that are worn down
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Teeth with gaps between them
  • Crooked teeth

Veneers can also be used for non-cosmetic purposes, like reinforcing a cracked tooth to protect it from further damage.

How many veneers do I need?

The number of veneers you’ll need depends on the issues being addressed. If you have a chipped or fractured tooth, you might only need one veneer. If you have several pointy or unusually shaped teeth in a row, Dr. Pasnikowska might recommend six or eight veneers. That way, your smile appears more balanced and symmetrical.

What happens when I get veneers?

Your journey towards a happier smile with veneers begins with a consultation. You and Dr. Pasnikowska discuss your cosmetic goals, and she helps you pick a size, shape, and color for your veneers to repair the appearance of your teeth.

Dr. Pasnikowska then shaves a thin layer of enamel from the front-facing portion of your teeth (for porcelain veneers) and takes a digital scan or impression of your mouth.

She sends that scan to a lab that fabricates your veneers and customizes them to fit comfortably in your mouth and blend seamlessly with the rest of your natural teeth.

You wear a set of temporary veneers while you wait for your permanent ones to come back from the lab, at which point you return to HP Dentistry PC to have them placed.

Dr. Pasnikowska checks that the size and fit are right, then seals them in place with permanent cement.

How long do veneers last?

Veneers usually last between 12-15 years, but it’s possible to extend their lifespan. Dr. Pasnikowska recommends brushing and flossing daily and visiting HP Dentistry PC once every six months for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning.

To prevent chips or cracks in your veneers, avoid bad habits like opening packaging with your teeth or biting down on hard objects. You might also want to wear a mouthguard if you grind your teeth or play contact sports.
